Huck Fasteners and Tooling

Huck LockBolt and structural blind fasteners are designed to provide permanent, vibration-resistant, superior-quality joining solutions for use in industrial applications. Because Huck fasteners offer relatively high tensile, shear and clamp properties they are suited to applications where the joints are integral to the structure. Offering a clean and safe alternative to welding and a more efficient fastening method than standard nuts and bolts, Huck fasteners offer benefits which other fastening methods cannot, including quick and easy installation, elimination of re-checking/replacement, and ultimately cost reductions. Each Huck fastener has its own unique characteristics ensuring there is a product for every application. Huck fasteners are used in many industrial markets including truck, trailer, automotive, HVAC, bus, coach, green energy and rail. Arconic Fastening Systems are constantly trying to develop new Huck products to meet the diverse and changing customer requirements. Today the product range based on Lou Huck’s original drawing of a LockBolt now known as the HuckBolt® has evolved to include small and large diameter fasteners, medium and heavy duty blind fasteners and associated installation tooling.

Key Benefits of Huck Fasteners:

  • Will not loosen even under extreme vibration
  • Maintenance free joints – no need to torque or re-torque
  • Lower lifetime total cost of joint – high shear and tensile strengths for increased fatigue life of the joint
  • High speed, easy to install systems can reduce production time by 75%
  • Improves health and safety – replace welded joints
  • Tamperproof – once installed cannot be removed without specialist tooling

Huck Lockbolts

Huck® Lockbolts are precision engineered two-piece fasteners that, once installed, no matter how vibration-intensive the environment, never come loose. Huck Lockbolts provide direct metal-to-metal contact when installed, which eliminates the transverse vibration often found in conventional nuts and bolts. Engineered for a wide range of applications, Huck Lockbolts deliver superior joining strength, shear, and tensile strength for an unmatched fastening solution. Huck LockBolts consist of two parts: a pin, and a collar. The bolt is inserted into one side of the joint material and the collar is placed over the bolt from the other side of the joint material. Access to both sides of the joint is required. A Huck installation tool is used to swage the collar materials into the grooves of the bolt providing a permanent and vibration resistant fastening.

Key Benefits of Huck LockBolts:

  • Permanent, mechanically locked fastener
  • Installation process automatically provides fastener values
  • No torque or re-torque required
  • Unlike conventional nuts and bolts, they will not work loose, even during extreme vibration
  • Rapid installation with quick and easy visual inspection
  • Excellent gap closure capability
  • Can be installed onto angled surfaces (5° maximum)
  • Tamperproof

The Huck LockBolt range includes:

Bobtail®

Designed to overcome inherent weaknesses with standard lockbolts, the BobTail has no pin-tail and as a result of this zero pin-break, no waste material to collect and dispose of or potential corrosion issues post installation. The lightweight, low-noise, low-maintenance tooling, which can be used for both installation and removing fasteners, provides a smooth, shock-free, speedy installation sequence i.e. two seconds for a 16mm diameter fastener – twice as fast as any other large diameter lockbolt on the market. As a result, no torque or impact is transferred to the operator.

Key Benefits of the Huck Bobtail®:

  • Unmatched installation speed – BobTail fasteners install in only 2 seconds, up to twice as fast as any other large diameter LockBolt on the market.
  • High fatigue strength thread form – BobTail thread form is shallower than a common bolt thread, so there is a larger cross-sectional area to spread out the service load, and fatigue strength increases. The thread form also has a much larger root radius than a common bolt thread, so stress concentration at the thread root is also reduced, which increases fatigue strength even more.
  • Maintenance free
  • Consistent clamp
  • Installation indicator on collar for visual inspection
  • Low installation noise and no waste – No pin-tail or pin-break hence resulting in; no material waste, low installation noise and increased corrosion resistance.
  • Easy to learn, shock free installation – eliminates jolts to the operator’s arms and hands.
  • Unique helical lock groove – Holds pin and collar in place prior to installation.

Magna-Grip®

Huck® brand Magna-Grip fasteners offer a generous selection of diameters – from 3/16 to 3/8 inch – for light to heavy-duty applications. They break flush, every time, and provide multi-thickness capability thanks to a wide grip range for each diameter. With Magna-Grip fasteners you achieve clean installations across-the-board, for a variety of assembly thicknesses, while stocking less inventory. In addition to consistent clamp force, shear, and tensile strength, the Huck Magna-Grip ensures absolute vibration resistance with a unique locking-groove design. It simply can’t come loose no matter how demanding the application – which reduces rework and warranty claims, providing long-term savings for your company and increased satisfaction for your customers. With Magna-Grip fasteners, quality installations do not depend upon the skill of the worker or a correctly calibrated tool. They install in seconds (up to 1200 per hour) and require no more than a glance to confirm a correct installation: If the core pin is flush with the collar, the Magna-Grip fastener has been properly installed. It’s that simple. And the installation process can be mastered in minutes with minimal training.

Huck 360®

The Huck 360® is the most advanced nut-and-bolt fastening system available today. A high-strength, vibration resistant, easy-to install engineered fastener, Huck 360 can be installed and removed using conventional tools. In addition, this unique fastener offers the ability to be retightened. Huck 360 stays tight under severe vibration loading by eliminating the “gap” around the crest of the bolt. When tightened, the Huck 360 fills this gap, which prevents transverse motion between the 360 nut and bolt, keeping the assembly in place. As long as the nut and bolt set remain free spinning after removal, the Huck 360 can be reused – the torque requirements are the same as on the first installation. Because the Huck 360 was designed with shallow, low-notch factor bolt threads (the grooves aren’t rolled as deep as a conventional bolt), the effective area of the fastener itself is widened by as much as 20%, increasing tensile and fatigue strength. In fact, the Huck 360 thread delivers 5 times the fatigue life. The Huck 360 installs faster and more easily than the nuts and bolts you’re accustomed to using, and maintenance intervals can be extended. The Huck 360’s superior fatigue strength has proven to increase equipment uptime and productivity.

Key Benefits of the Huck 360®:

  • Resists vibration loosening
  • Withstands high spike loads
  • Increases equipment uptime
  • Installs 300% faster than conventional locknuts
  • Can be installed and removed with conventional tools

Huck Structural Blind Fasteners

Huck pre-assembled, one-piece blind fasteners are ideal when access from only one side of the joint material is available. The blind fastener is placed in a pre-drilled hole and is installed by using an installation tool to pull the mandrel or pin head into the rivet body, expanding the rivet body and causing it to flare on the blind side of the joint material creating a permanent and vibration resistant fastening. Installation is typically complete in one second. The shear strength of structural blind fasteners is generated by the combined resistance against failure of the pin and sleeve. This takes place along the joint shear line between fastened plates. The tensile strength of structural blind fasteners differs to that of LockBolts, as they form a blind side positive lock either by bulbing or expanding of the sleeve. The sleeve, assisted by the permanently secured pin, therefore resists failure along its centre line.

Key Benefits of Huck Structural Blind Fasteners:

  • Internal locking mechanism retains the pin
  • Structural fastener after installation
  • Higher strength than a standard open end blind fastener
  • Ideal for use where access is limited on one side of the application
  • Preassembled fastener – insert one part in the hole and install
  • A variety of installation tooling options available

The Huck Structural Blind Fasteners range includes:

Magna-Lok®

The Huck Magna-Lok is a versatile, hole filling fastener that can be installed with conventional installation tools. It has a unique circle-lock feature, which means a simple visual inspection ensures it is installed properly, 100% of the time. Unlike competitive blind structural rivets, the Magna-Lok doesn’t require a special nose-piece insert in order to be properly installed; the locking mechanism has been engineered into the fastener eliminating tooling and operator error. Magna-Lok is moisture-resistant, available in steel, stainless steel, 316 stainless steel or aluminum in diameters up to 1/2”. With a large grip range the Magna-Lok is the best gap-pulling fastener available. Like all Huck fasteners, it provides a secure joint and is vibration resistant.

There is not a more vibration resistant blind fastener than the BOM, or one that works harder in so many different applications. Featuring a unique push and pull installation design, the BOM fastening system is tough enough for military vehicles and equipment, auto suspensions, amusement park rides, rail car assembly, and shaft steel storage and retrieval racks. Even the most demanding high-tensile application is no match for the strength of the BOM fastening system. Because installing BOM fasteners is so easy, a worker can learn the installation procedure in just 10 minutes, eliminating the need to hire certified welders or specially trained employees. And because they install from just one side, BOMs can be used in all blind side applications. Installations are more accurate than other fasteners, because the element of human error is not an issue. In other words, correct installation doesn’t depend on operator skill or specialized tools. In addition, you can often start using BOM fasteners immediately with your current tools, saving you more money in the long run.

Key Benefits of the Huck BOM®:

  • Unmatched installation speed

Huck’s proprietary, advanced swage forward tooling for BobTail fasteners, the SFBTT series, makes the installation process quicker and easier by reducing the force required to install each fastener. More compact and lighter weight than previous Huck lockbolt production tooling, BobTail installation tools also offer greater operator flexibility as well as extended reach into difficult areas. For tight, space-constrained applications, swage forward BobTail tools allow the operator to position his or her hand at a safe distance from the working structure during installation.
